2012 Wheat Yield Contest
Kansas wheat farmers are invited to participate in the Third Annual Kansas Wheat Yield Contest, and win $1,000 in cash.
This contest is open to any wheat grower in Kansas. Members of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers may enter for free; non-members must pay $50 per entry to defray the cost of hiring a Third Party Verifier during the 2012 wheat harvest.
The contest includes three regions: Region 1 (Western Kansas), Region 2 (Central Kansas) and Region 3 (Eastern Kansas).
Farmers must enroll a 5-acre plot into the contest, and provide management information about that plot. Producers may enter more than once, but each entry must be submitted on a separate form.
Those contestants achieving the top yield in each region will receive $1,000 in cash plus a plaque from Kansas Wheat. In addition, sponsors are paying additional cash for winning entries using AgriPro, WestBred or Kansas Wheat Alliance seed.
“Our objective not only is to recognize top producers, but develop a list of best management practices that other farmers can use in their own wheat operation,” says Justin Gilpin, Kansas Wheat CEO. “We believe the Yield Contest will be a way for all wheat producers to learn new management strategies that could improve wheat yields and quality throughout the state.”
In addition to prizes awarded based on yield, farmers will be eligible for the Quality Initiative of the contest. Participants will be asked to collect a two-pound sample of wheat at harvest and send it to the Kansas Wheat office. These samples will be graded, scored and evaluated based on a number of quality parameters. Owner of the top-quality sample will receive $250 in cash.
- Non-KAWG members entering the contest must submit a completed entry form and $50 per entry payment by April 15, 2012.
- Members of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers may enter for free by April 15, 2012.
- Contest agronomic/management forms are due to Kansas Wheat by June 5, 2012.
- Yield results are due to Kansas Wheat by July 10, 2012.
Contestants must be wheat farmers at least 18 years of age and Kansas residents.
Contestants must use certified seed. The contest is open only to dryland fields. The contest is open only to winter wheat varieties.
Contest winners will be announced in July.
